Marion St Clair (Bart) Bartholomew, 69, of Toledo, died Wednesday in the Toledo Hospital of acute pancreatitis.
Mr. Bartholomew was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Kuhlman Corporation, a long-time supplier of ready-mix concrete and related building materials in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. He had served the company for 40 years.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 42 years, Irene (Kuhlman); son Bill, of Portland, OR; daughter Sally Goligoski, of Perrysburg; and 4 granddaughters. Mr. Bartholomew is also survived by his brother, Sam, of Kingsport, TN, and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bartholomew was the youngest of 4 children of Sam Bart, Sr. and Marion (Wilson) in Hillsboro, WV. He was among a class of 17 graduates from Hillsboro High School and attended Morris Harvey College in Charlestown, WV in Engineering. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941-1945 as a captain and as a navigator, primarily over northern Africa.
After World War II, he attended Ohio State University and majored in Business Administration. Upon graduation in 1948, Mr. Bartholomew joined the Schaffer Pen Company in sales. In 1950, he became Sales Manager for Kuhlman. In that capacity, he worked directly with most of the commercial and residential builders in the Toledo area. In 1967, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. He was named Chairman in 1987.
He was named the Area Concrete Man of the Year in 1979.
Mr. Bartholomew was a long-time board member of St. Luke's Hospital. He also had served on the boards of the Toledo Chamber of Commerce, First Federal Savings and Loan Association and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
He was actively involved with All Saints Lutheran Church, Heatherdowns Country Club, the Toledo Club and Toledo Rotary. Mr. Bartholomew was an associate member of both the Associated General Contractors and the Ohio Contractor's Association. He served on the Arrowhead Park Architectural Committee. He also had been an active member of the former Deauville Fishing Camp in Quebec, which was owned by a group of Toledo Area Contractors.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Saturday in All Saints Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 2-5 PM and 7-9 PM Friday in the Bennett-Emmert Funeral Home, Secor Rd. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family requests that any contributions be made to All Saints Lutheran Church or to the St. Luke's Hospital Foundation.
