Charles F. Shea, 95, who lived in Fabius all his life, died Friday, January 6, 2012. He had been school district clerk, town councilman, supervisor, county legislator, county economic development director and a member and officer of many local and county organizations. The Shea family store on Main St. was the center of community activity for more than 80 years. He was born in Fabius on November 20, 1916, the son of Michael G. and Jessie Saunders Shea. After graduating from Fabius Central School in 1934, he attended Central City Business Institute and Cazenovia Seminary Junior College before graduating from Syracuse University in January 1942. Mr. Shea was immediately accepted into the U.S.N.R. and served in the U.S. Navy until the end of World War II aboard the USS West Virginia (BB48) with the U.S. South Pacific Fleet in action at Leyte, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Battle of Suriago Straits. He left the Navy in 1946 as a senior grade lieutenant (USNR). He operated the M.G. Shea Store for 35 years and owned and operated Fabius Hardware Co. in Fabius for many of those years. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Fabius and of Immaculate Conception Church in Pompey. He was Fabius Central School board clerk for 17 years, resigning to join the town board. A lifelong Democrat, he became supervisor in 1966 and a member of the Onondaga County Board of Supervisors. When the Onondaga County Legislature was created, he represented the 12th District, covering most of southern Onondaga County, for 10 years. During Mr. Shea's tenure, the county's Civic Center, several Onondaga Community College buildings and Van Duyn Hospital were built. He was appointed Onondaga County Director of Economic Development by County Executive John H. Mulroy and also served as administrative secretary of the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency. He was a member of the Fabius Fire Dept. for 57 years and the Pompey Lions Club for 37 years. He was a member of the Fabius American Legion Martin June Post throughout its 59 years of existence. He participated in the Memorial Day parade every year after his return from WW II, wearing his Navy uniform for 35 years. Mr. Shea was deeply interested in local history and was relied upon by reporters, researchers and families for information not found anywhere else. He was a member and former president of the Fabius Historical Society. He also served as an officer and director of the Onondaga Historical Association and as an officer and director of The Friends of Lorenzo. In addition, he maintained memberships in several nearby historical and senior citizens groups. He was former president of the Fabius Community Council. He was an active trustee of Fabius Evergreen Cemetery for 20 years and volunteered for many years to trim brush and clean tombstones. He also served on the Southern Hills Preservation Corp. board for four years, the Elmcrest Children's Center board for 26 years, and the board of the New York State Assn. of Supervisors and County Legislators for four years. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane (Harrington) Sheedy in 1979. Surviving are a stepson, Leo V. Sheedy Jr. of Sarasota, FL; a stepgranddaughter, Leigh Sheedy of New York City; nieces Suzanne Demong of Cardiff, CA, Natalie Emlin of Ithaca and Denise Demong of New York City; and a nephew, Leo Demong of Vermontville. His sister, Mary Shea Demong, died January 7, 2011. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m., Saturday January 14, at Immaculate Conception Church in Pompey, NY. Burial will be in Fabius Evergreen Cemetery. At his direction, there will be no calling hours.
