Roman Catholic Cardinal. Third Archbishop of Sydney. A native of Leighlinbridge, near Kildare, in the Irish county of Carlow, he was educated and attended seminary at the Irish College, in Rome, city where he attended also the Urbanian Athenaeum of Propaganda Fide, and was ordained priest on March 19, 1853. In Rome, he worked at the Irish College, first as teacher, from 1853 to 1856, then as its vice-rector, from 1856 to 1866. He was also professor of Hebrew in the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum of Propaganda Fide and vice-rector of the Scottish College. He returned to Ireland in 1866 as secretary of his uncle, Cardinal Paul Cullen, archbishop of Dublin. He served in that post from 1866 to 1872, while being professor of Scripture, at Clonliffe College. He is the founder of the “Irish Ecclesiastical Record”. He accompanied Cardinal Cullen to the Vatican Council, in 1869 and 1870. On December 22, 1871, he was elected titular bishop of Olba and appointed coadjutor of Ossory. He was consecrated, on March 5, 1872, in Dublin, by his uncle. He succeeded to the see of Ossory, on August 11, 1872. He was promoted to the metropolitan see of Sydney, in Australia, on March 14, 1884. He travelled thousands of miles visiting the churches and dioceses of his metropolitan province. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal in the consistory of July 27, 1885 : the first cardinal of Australia. He excused himself from participating in the conclave of 1903 due to the great distance to Rome. He passed away in Manly. (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
