KERNERSVILLE – Winston Eugene "Gene" Campbell, Jr. 88, died on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at Arbor Ridge at Kernersville with his wife by his side.

Gene was born in Saint Petersburg, FL, on November 21, 1923, a son to the late Winston Eugene and Georgia White Campbell. Gene was raised in McCormick, SC and later joined the US Army. He married his first wife and the mother of his children, who preceded him in death, Mary John Foster on November 28, 1950. Gene was a veteran of WWII and of The Koran War, serving eight months in a German prison camp, and retired as a CWO III in 1965 after 20 years of service. Gene settled in Archdale after retiring from the military. He became a member of First Baptist Church in Archdale serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher of the Young Adults Class, finance director, and serving in any capacity that the church needed him. He was employed with Life of Virginia until his retirement in 1987. He married his second wife who also preceded him in death, Quenell Loflin Campbell. Gene was also a member of the American Legion Post #36 in Kernersville and of the 9th Infantry Division Association. He also enjoyed golfing, dancing, fishing, and hunting. On September 13, 1997 he married the former, Bonnie Grubbs who survives of the home. Gene was currently a member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Bedola Smith and Florence Longerbeam. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother and will be truly missed.

He is also survived by five daughters, Mary Kay Darr and her husband, Mack of Walkertown, Jan King and her husband, Dennis of Trinity, Carol Richardson and her husband John of Thomasville, April Campbell and fiancé Kim Brookshire of Archdale, and Patricia Austin and husband Travis of Trinity; two step sons, Charlie H. Grubbs III and David T. Grubbs; three sisters, Cornelia Wilkie of Charleston, SC, Marion Martin and her husband Ralph of Evans, GA, and Lillian Wilkie and her husband Robert of Augusta, GA; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 4 step-great grandchildren; and many special Friends at Saint Andrews.

A funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday, January 9th in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Rev. Dana Fruits and Rev. J.C. Alley officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park with Military Honors. The family will receive friends, Sunday from 6 until 8 pm at the funeral home Memorial contributions may be directed to Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, 357 Old Hollow Road, Winston Salem, NC, 27105 or to First Baptist Church in Archdale, 10607 North Main Street, Archdale, NC 27263.
