Fred Vornsand Funeral Held September 10

Funeral services for Fred Gerhard Vornsand,85,longtime Weimar city marshal and police Chief,were held September 10 at Weimar United Church of Christ.Rev.Norman 'Skip' Sirnic officiated.

Vornsand died Sept.7 at Colorado-Fayette Medical Center where he had been a patient for the previous ten days.

He was born December 30,1907 in Fayette County,to Ferdinand and Frieda Schriefer Vornsand.He attended Wildwood School.

On October 22,1929,he married Esther Helen Dahse at the New Bielau Community home of the bride's parents,Gustave and Alma Poppe Dahse.

With the exception of fourteen months service as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army during World War II,Vornsand was known as "the law" in Weimar from 1936 to 1977.

During this period he initially served in the elected capacity of City Marshal and subsquently as the appointed Chief of Police.

Even after retiring from full time law enforcement duty,he served the ever expanding Weimar Police Department as a part time officer for many years.

Vornsand was a member of the Weimar United Church of Christ and Brotherhood.Among the many other organizations to which he belonged were the Colorado County Law Enforcement Association,Weimar Lions Club,American Legion Post #259,Weimar Masonic Lodge #423,Arabia Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

Among the many awards he received were the Golden Trowel Award for exceptional service from the Grand Lodge of Texas;the City of Weimar Special Award for outstanding service from 1936 to 1977;the City of Weimar resolution designating him Honorary Chief of Police after his retirement;and the Knights of Columbus Certificate of Merit in recognition of exceptional service to the community.

Pallbearers were Mark Sales,Victor Vornsand,Travis Sales,Perry Kloesel,Michael Carter and Kenneth Vornsand.

Honorary Pallbearers were;members of the Weimar Masonic Lodge #423,Weimar Voluntary Fire Department and American Legion Post #259.
