He was a right handed pitcher, making his debut for the St. Louis Cardinals on September 25, 1935. For ten seasons, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1935-38) and the Boston Red Sox (1941-46). He ended his career with a record of 52 wins, 34 loss, 16 complete games, 2 shutouts, 16 saves, 307 strikeouts and a 3.66 earned run average. After his time as a player, he coached for St. Louis Cardinals from (1951–55) and scouted for the Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds until his death, at the age of 68.
