Birth: Aug. 24, 1893
Hanover County
Virginia, USA
Death: Dec. 6, 2002
Caroline County
Virginia, USA

Mary Eliza Broaddus, 109, of Bagby, died at the home of her son, Woodford. Mrs. Broaddus was born at Peakes Turnout, Hanover County, the third of four children born to Christopher Columbus and Flora Temple Wright Broaddus. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War. She graduated from Barton Height High School with honors, and taught Latin and algebra at Atlee High School. Until recently, she had lived at her husband's homeplace, Taylorsville, since their 1915 marriage.

At her death, Mrs. Broaddus was the oldest member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher until she was in her 90s, and as communion steward. She was a very active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Caroline Historical Society and a Real Daughter of the Caroline Grays.

Mrs. Broaddus will be remembered as a loving and inspiring matriarch of her family and a devoted Christian with a great sense of humor. When asked on her 100th birthday for advice on living a century, she said, "Take things as they come and accept it as God's will." Her favorite quote was from Sam Walter Foss, "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend of man."

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Woodford Silas Broaddus and her daughter, Mary Temple Broaddus.

She was survived by a daughter, Jean Hudson, widow of George Hudson of Richmond; two sons, Woodford Bates Broaddus and his wife, of Bagby, and Perry Broaddus and his wife, Jean, of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and caregivers.

A funeral was to have been held Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial was to follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Woman, c/o Susan Huffman, treasurer, 24479 Mattaponi Trail, Milford, VA 22514.
