Tracy Carlisle Coleman, 84, a construction contractor and a founder of the Indian Creek School, died of a stroke Oct. 16 at his home in Sherwood Forest.
Born in Washington, D.C., Mr. coleman was raised in Takoma Park and graduated from Central High School in 1931 and the University of Maryland in 1935. He had lived part time in Sherwood forest for 42 years and full time thelast 10 years.
He founded Coleman and Wood Construction Co., and was one of the founding members and president of Associated Builders and Contractors, and a founder and financial backer of Indian Creek School in Crownsville.
Mr. Coleman was a lieutenant colonel in the Army reserve and a former commander of the 1886th Engineer Aviation Battalion.
He was a member of Rotary International and past district governor of Maryland District 762 of Rotary International. He was a member of Colesville Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church in Millersville and the Military Order of World Wars.
He was an artist, and his works hung in numerous places, including Indian Creek School. He was a member of the Washington Landscape Club and Olney Art Guild.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Virginia Ijams; a son, Tracy C. Coleman Jr. of Crownsville; a daughter, Anne C. Chambers of Sherwood forest; three brothers, Thomas L. and Albert S. Coleman, both of Bethesda, and William P. Coleman of Florida; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church , 921 Generals Highway. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tracy Coleman Memorial Fund at Indian Creek School, Evergreen Road, Crownsville, MD 21032.
