Harriet Newell (Bruce) Edwards is the daughter of Charles Perry Bruce, Jr. & Mary Handy (Harris) Bruce. She was a deaf mute and married Josephus Berry Edwards who was also a deaf mute. At the age of almost 12, she was admitted to the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT. This is the oldest school serving the deaf community in America and is the birthplace of American Sign Language. She was the mother of four children: Jennie Spring Edwards, (Unk.) Edwards, Emma Weston Edwards (deaf), and Walter Josephus Edwards. She was admitted to the Central State Hosp., Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA in 1859 and lived there for 28 years until her death. Her grave #469 is no longer marked. Her numbered, metal marker is one that was removed by a lawn mowing service and thrown into the woods. I did not find her number among the markers used in the Memorial section (see photo) of the cemetery.
