SERVICES HELD FOR S. S. WORLEY
Funeral services for S. S. Worley were conducted last Friday afternoon from the Baptist Church with Rev. O. W. Brock officiating. Music was furnished by a male quartette consisting of P. S. Strauble, Dale and Robert Spindler, and Gene Bennet, with Mrs. Fred Hageman at the piano. The body was laid to rest in the Holyoke cemetery, the pallbearers being J. G. Scholl, Merle Foster, Al Smith, Leslie Kunkel, Ralph Anderson, and Walter Clark.
Relatives and friends attending from a distance were Mrs. W. E. Earl, Maywood, Nebraska, Mrs. Mary Ruppert, Holbrook, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mathers, Ruppert, Idaho, Mr. Frank Borland, Essex, Iowa, Clyde Worley, Canon City, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Borland, Denver, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Carwin, Proctor, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. Harve McGee, Peetz, Colorado and Mrs. Dora Francis and Mr. Harve Catchpole, Eckley, Colorado.
Smith Seth Worley, son of Uriah and Mary (Clay) Worley, was born at Mercer, Pennsylvania January 7, 1861 and passed away at his home in Holyoke, Colorado April 30, 1947 at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 21 days.
At the time of his death he was in point of residence the second oldest man in the county having arrived in Phillips County July 17, 1885 following his graduation from Doane College at Crete, Nebraska. He filed on a homestead five miles east of the present site of Holyoke and lived on that farm until 1908 when he moved to Holyoke following his election as County Judge of Phillips County, which office he held 14 years. He has made his residence at Holyoke since that time.
He was united in marriage December 31, 1891 to Miss Lillian Borland who survives him.
Throughout his entire career as school teacher, farmer, judge, and banker, Mr. Worley was vitally interested in the religious and educational activities of his community. At the time of his death he was Senior Deacon of the Baptist Church which office he had held for many years and he was especially active in the planning and equipping of the new Baptist church in Holyoke which was erected in 1928. He was superintendent of the Sunday School 15 years, retiring from that office just two years ago.
Surviving him, besides his widow, are one son, Jay of Waverly, Nebraska, one granddaughter, Mrs. Lillian Bullock, Oxnard, California; a niece, Mrs. Mamie Barbour, a member of the family since the age of nine and who had cared for him during his last illness; three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Earl, Maywood, Nebraska, Mrs. Anna Moulding, Wheatland, Wyoming, Mrs. Myrtle Wood, San Jose, California; one brother, E.L. Worley, Mollala, Oregon; and many other relatives and friends.
