Son of William Carr & Catherine McHugh both born in Ireland. Carr was the last survivor of the crew of the United States steamship Cumberland sunk by the Merrimac in Hampton Roads, Virginia during the Civil War. He enlisted in the Navy prior to the Civil War and when his enlistment expired he reenlisted and served throughout the war, engaging in many battles and fighting blockade runners. He assisted in the capture of Fort Sumter.
