Karl Dean Reed of Asheville, North Carolina, age 81, formerly of Battle Creek and Marshall, died on December 27, 2011. Mr. Reed was born on May 21, 1930, the youngest of 14 children of Flora (Hamma) and Quinn J. Reed. He graduated from Athens High School in 1948. He served in the Navy for four years, attaining Radarman 1st class on the U.S.S. Purdy, a destroyer. He graduated from Northrop Aeronautical Institute, Inglewood, Calif. and the U. of Michigan with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He was employed by Bendix Corp, Mishawaka, Ind.; Modern Design, Battle Creek and for over 30 years at General Foods. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts for many years. Mr. Reed and Ardis M. Helwig were married Feb. 1951. This union ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife Ann, of Asheville, North Carolina; three children, Phillip C. (Carol) Reed of Franklin, Ohio, David D. Reed and Annette M. (William) Ballagh, both of Munith, Michigan. Four grandchildren, Amanda, Skeeter, Daniel and Joey Ballagh. One brother, Glenn Reed, of Climax and one sister, Carol Foust, of Washington State. There are no services planned, burial in North Carolina.
