Daniel C. "Dan" Burns, 89, 1521 26th Ave., Altoona, died Friday at Golden Living Center-Hillview, Altoona, after an extended illness. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Frank and Charlotta (Frye) Burns. He married Miriam M. Bell Nov. 26, 1945, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. She died March 30, 2007.

Surviving are a daughter, Maureen A. (husband, David) Hanekamp of Oakmont; two sons: Mark D. Burns and Matthew W. Burns, both of Altoona; eight grandchildren: Amy L. (husband, Jeff) Snyder, Joseph D. (wife, Jillian) Deible, Matt "LT" Burns, Brendon Burns, Brittney Burns, Jenna Long, David (wife, Miyako) Hanekamp and Lisa (husband, Bruce) Hamilton; and six great- grandchildren: Lydia Snyder, Claire Snyder, Myles Snyder, Lance Hanekamp, Natasha Hanekamp and Alaina Hamilton. He was preceded in death by a son, Denis Alan Burns; a brother, William "Bill" Burns; and three sisters: Martha Stoiber, Geraldine "Gerry" Treese and Marian Muller.

Mr. Burns was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. He retired as a car builder from the Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona, with 39 years of service.
Mr. Burns was a 1937 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Equity, St. Stanislaus Kostka Brotherhood, United Veterans Association, Iaia Post 827 of American Legion and Catholic War Veterans. He enjoyed tennis, swimming, Penn State and Steelers football, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling.

Mr. Burns served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during WWII. He was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and five Overseas Service Bars.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2007, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal rite will be held at Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated Sunday evening.
