WALT SAGEHORN RITES JULY 14
Walter L. Sagehorn, 89, of Holyoke, died on July 11, 1988 at North Colorado Medical Hospital in Greeley.
He was born in Clatonia, Nebraska October 11, 1898 to Dietrich and Caroline (Kayser) Sagehorn. Walt was baptized as an infant into the Christian faith and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1912. He was an active and faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke at the time of his death.
He received his formal education in Thayer County, Nebraska. It was there that he also learned his trade.
Walt married Ester Brase on January 27, 1921 in Deshler, Nebraska. He and his bride moved from Nebraska to a farm near Amherst that same year. In 1930 the family moved to Holyoke where he lived and worked until his death.
Walter worked as a contractor and builder, leaving his mark on the Holyoke community and on areas in nearby Nebraska with many homes, schools, churches and other building projects. He was extremely proud of his work in the extensive building and remodeling of Zion Lutheran Church in the 1950s.
During his lifetime he served his Lord in many ways in the church. In the church he held numerous offices and board positions. He was an active and a strong supporter of the programs of Zion. His devotion and dedication to his Lord and Savior served as an example for others to see and follow.
Walter also served in the community over the years. He served on the hospital board for 24 years. He was the board president that entire time. He served several terms on the Holyoke City Council. He was a member of the Holyoke Fire Department. In addition to these positions, he always took an interest in the various community activities being held.
Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. His clocks, tables, lamps, desks, chests and other handiwork adorn his home as well as the homes of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Albert, Dietrich and Lewis; one sister Catherine; and a grandson Alan Lindgren.
He is survived by his wife Esther; three daughters and their husbands Darlene and Lowell Hagemann of Aurora, Lillian and Dewey Lindgren of Holyoke, and Shirley and Stan Travis of Holyoke; grandchildren Brig. General and Mrs. Kenneth Hagemann of Omaha, Nebraska, Lt. Col. and Mrs. Robert Hagemann of Bedford, Texas, Barry Lindgren of Boulder, Steve Lindgren of Holyoke, Commander and Mrs. Thomas Travis of Kancohe, Hawaii, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reece (Lanette) of El Dorado Hills, California and Mr. and Mrs. Jon Travis of Parker; 14 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a sister Sophia Schultz of Lincoln, Nebraska and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke Thursday, July 14. Burial was in the Holyoke Memorial Cemetery.
