Robert Ellison Thayer
1916 ~ 2011
Robert Thayer, Beloved son, husband, father, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend to everyone, passed away on December 22, 2011 in SLC, Utah.
He was born on February 5, 1916 in SLC to James Henry Thayer and Hazel Harman Thayer. He was raised in SLC and graduated from East High School in 1933 where he met many lifelong friends. He and his friends enjoyed and active social life and participated in many sports (primarily MM basketball and softball). He enrolled at the University of Utah and studied engineering and business for about 2 years. He then went to work on construction sites here in the Salt Lake valley. He was driving trucks for the family business owned by his grandparents (Ma and Pa Harmon); he loved them dearly.
He met Pat (Betty) Poulton in 1935. They dated and went steady and finally were married August 23, 1941. Then, an event occurred that changed everyone's live - Pearl Harbor! He was drafted into the Army in April of 1942 as a private. Things changed for the better because an appointment to the Air Forces' communications cadet school became available. He graduated from the program as a 2nd Lieutenant and became part of the 533rd squadron of the 381st bomb group stationed in Ridgewell, England. He served his country with honor and great pride during his military career. He retired from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After the war, he returned to SLC and entered the printing profession. He was a successful salesman and provided his services for many satisfied customers. He retired from the printing business at Utah Bank Note in 1982. After retirement he continued to enjoy his love of sports. He was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame here in Salt Lake which pleased him. In his later years he bowled regularly and was an avid golfer. He actually played nine holes of golf on several occasions during the summer of 2010 at the age of 94. He also thoroughly enjoyed the great scenery that Utah so richly provides. During his lifetime, he went camping, fishing, hunting and simply enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends (he especially enjoyed the time he spent with Earl Camp). Earl was a Special friend.
He is survived by his wife, of 70 years, Elizabeth (Pat) (Betty) P. Thayer, Tana M. Thayer (his daughter who loved him dearly), Mitzi Bailey (sister-in-law) and three wonderful nieces and their families. He is also survived by his cousins, Robert and William Harman. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Private family services have been held.
