SAMUEL E. BARNES ENDS HIS LIFE
PROMINENT TEXAS MERCHANT PASSED AWAY- BORN IN COLUMBIA, HAS MANY RELATIVES IN MARION COUNTY
The people of Trinity County, in Texas are in mourning as they never mourned before, the father of the city of Trinity, is no more. Samuel Edward Barnes died at his home Wednesday, Dec 16, 1914, shortly after the noon hour. He had been mentally oppressed for several months- not because of his own welfare but for the people who he had helped so long, year after year, furnishing them with food and clothing on which to make their crops, and when so many of them were crying hard times into his ears and he was somewhat handicapped in alleviating the situation- the inconveniences which the closeness of money has caused and which so many people are not willing to bear, and make the best of things as they come- the burden grew too heavy as a result Mr. Barnes memory slipped away from him and in that abnormal state he formed the act that ended his earthly career using the 44 barrel of a small rifle called a "game getter." Samuel Edward Barnes was born in Columbia, Marion Co., Ms., March 26, 1861. He went to Texas with his father's family about the year of 1866, settling near Moscow, where his family rented land and farmed a few years, riding to and from the town of Moscow and kept books for the merchants of that town. In 1872 the Barnes family moved to Trinity and the father engaged in business, and in the year of 1877 when he died, S. E. Barnes then a boy 16 years old assumed his father's business cares and established the firm of Barnes & Lister, his mother representing the Barnes name. Later on S. E. was sent to Galveston to take a business course; this he completed in three weeks' time, thus establishing a record for rapidity in completion; up to that time no person had made such a record as Mr. Barnes established. Due to adversities the firm failed in 1900; but Mr. Barnes borrowed capital, cleared the firm's name, and established a large mercantile business. Assuming as he did his father's cares, he fed, clothed, and educated his brothers and sisters. He has been very successful, has accumulated considerable property and has given in charitable causes, double or triple, no doubt, the amount he left.
