Denver R. (Buck) Browning, 84, passed away Sunday (January 1, 2012) at Shannondale of Maryville in Maryville, Tennessee after a long illness.
Mr. Browning was a well known businessman in Lee County, Virginia where he resided for sixty years and engaged in a variety of enterprises including real estate (licensed broker and former owner of Lee Auction Company), farming, mining, and banking. He was born May 21, 1927 in Cawood, Kentucky, the oldest son of Ray and Jerusha Browning who predeceased him. At the age of 15 he entered Tennessee Military Academy. Upon graduation in 1945, Mr. Browning joined the U. S. Navy. Upon conclusion of military service he attended the University of Kentucky and married his high school sweetheart, Valdean Reed. They were married 61 years until Valdean's death in 2008.
Denver R. Browning, who was referred to by the family and community as simply "Buck", moved to Lee County after college graduation with an agriculture degree, residing on a farm at Jonesville since 1950. Initially, Buck taught agriculture to returning war veterans. After ten years of service as a teacher he became a dairy farm specialist for Kraft Foods. Mr. Browning retired from Kraft in 1976. Thereafter he was a partner in Lee Auction company and invested in numerous other businesses and farming operations.
Mr. Browning passionately served the citizens of southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee in a number of positions including Director of the Burley Stabilization Board (34 years), Chairman of Lee Farmer Co-op, board member of Lenowisco Planning District, and board member of Duffield Development Authority. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Jonesville and Masonic Lodge No. 47.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy B. Turner (Walt) of Knoxville, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Laura L. Turner (Stephen) of Franklin, Tennessee, Denver B. Turner (Marissa) and Clay Turner (Katie) both of Knoxville, Tennessee and Walter W. Turner, Jr. (Missy) of Louisville, Kentucky; four great-grandsons, Browning, Brooks, Hayden and Alex; sister, Eula G. York of Jonesville, Virginia; and brothers, Richard Browning (Betty) and Edward Browning (Phyllis) both of Harlan, Kentucky.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday, January 3rd at the First United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Virginia.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday at the church with Rev. Layne Pennington officiating.
Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens at Woodway, Virginia.
