|Death: ||Dec. 30, 2011|
B (FAMARS) Company
The Yorkshire Regiment
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Pte King was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a partnered foot patrol with Afghan national security forces near the village of Llara Kalay, in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
Aged 19, he was from Darlington. Pte King joined the army in 2009, completed infantry training in May 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan on his first operational tour in October 2011. He quickly impressed as a gritty, determined and hard-working Yorkshire warrior. Known as "Kingy", he was always the first to volunteer for anything and could be found at the front at work or play. He was a popular member of his section with his upbeat personality and infectious sense of humour.
Pte King leaves behind his mother Karen, father Barry, brothers Ian and Stephen, and girlfriend Kelly, along with other relatives and friends. His family said, "John was a tremendous son, brother and boyfriend. He was a devoted grandson, a loving family member, and a proud soldier who died doing a job he adored. He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends, and loyal German Shepherd dog Rex."
Funeral with full military honours was held on January 17, 2012 at St Cuthbert's Church, Darlington followed by private interment.
