WW I US Army Veteran. On January 30, 1914, he came to Otis, Colorado with his parents where he made his home until he enlisted on August 9, 1918. He was serving as a Private in the heavy artillery which was in training at Fort MacArthur, California at the time of his death. Rufus died of the Spanish Influenza just before being shipped out overseas. He was of the fourth generation of the Bartholomew family that have served their country in time of war, his father was in the Spanish-American and his grandfather and great grandfather were in the Civil War.
A new American Legion Post in Otis, Colorado, was formed after his death to honor him - Bartholomew Post No. 63.
