Born in Etowah County AL August 1, 1922, her mother died when she was 6 years old. Raised by her maternal grandmother until the age of 12 when the grandmother died. She then lived with her best friend, Grace Cutchen Allen. While living there Grace's mother Minnie took sick and eventually died in the arms of Margaret. She then returned to the care of her father and step-mother.
She married Herman George Townley in Rome, GA on the vernal equinox in 1942. They moved to Orange, TX at the end of George's military service in the United States Air Force. She worked as a switchboard operater for Francis Ann Lutcher Memorial hospital and had a morbid facination with accidents. She was a longtime dental assistant for Dr. Flippin. Margaret was an avid bowler and bridge player. She loved flowers and had an assortment of hard to grow and find plants. A wonderful seamstress, she made all her children's clothing and costumes for dance.
She and George were married 13 years before the birth of their first child. When asked why they waited so long to have children she has been heard to reply "We didn't want anyone to think we had to get married!" Their second, and last child, was born just 22 months later.
She was a wonderful mother, active in everything in which her children participated, from being room mother to working concessions stands at football games, but her greatest vocation was "Mema".
