Eugene was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to Patrick Sullivan and Catherine Sullivan. He had an older brother Timothy. The family immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania about 1883. Patrick worked as a laborer and they lived on the South Side near Carson Street. Timothy eventually became a motorman for the trolley lines, married Anna Schuler and had six children. About 1905 Eugene married Ella Elizabeth Martin, daughter of James Martin and Anna Ward. They had 9 children, but one died as a child. Eugene worked as a machinist for the Pressed Steel Car company, then Westinghouse, and finally for Miller Printing Company until the time of his death on Jan 2, 1946. They owned a home at 748 Ohio River Blvd, in Avalon, PA
