Graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1832, he was an assistant engineer of the Baltimore and Susquehanna railroad from 1836 until 1839. He was elected President of the College of William and Mary beginning in 1854. The College voted to suspend classes during the Civil War, during which time he served as Colonel of the 32nd regiment of Virginia Volunteers in the Confederate Army. He also spent time as the adjutant general to General Joseph E Johnston. He regained his office at William and Mary after the war. He had been opposed to secession, and spoke to Congress several times in an attempt to gain appropriations for the College for damages done during the War. He often used his own money to help keep the school open, even having to close it for some time from 1881 to 1888. He retired shortly after reopening the school, but served as its President Emeritus until his death. (bio by: kimshockey (reb) (inactive))
