He moved to Akron in 1940 to work as an assistant golf pro fessional at Portage C.C. In 1941, he became the Head Golf Professional at Firestone C.C. and after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, returned to Akron and Firestone C.C. While at Firestone, he won many tournaments, highlighted by the 1946 Masters. He also was a member of the 1947 United States Ryder Cup Team. Herman went on to own Loyal Oak Golf Course and later Keisers Driving Range in Copley. He was a life member of the Professional Golfers Association and an inductee in the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame, Summit County Sports Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
