Woodrow W. Mitchell, 83, of South Main Street, died Saturday morning at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Mitchell retired from the U.S. Postal Service and from Modern Woodmen Insurance Co.
He had been a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for more than 50, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class.
In World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the 2nd Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Cannon Co.
He fought in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of American Legion Post No. 64, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post No. 1990, Modern Woodmen Camp No. 16867, Leonard's Losers Breakfast Club, Kmart Breakfast Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Postal Worker's Union, and Veteran's Group 40/8.
Survivors include his wife: Nancy Cox Mitchell; a son and daughter-in-law: Jimmy and Denise Mitchell of Nashville; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law: Cassie and Roger Wampler and Tisha and Tim Harrison of Greeneville; two stepgrandchildren: T.W. Harrison and Terran Harrison of Greeneville; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Clyde and Jessie Mitchell and Henry and Christine Mitchell, all of Kingsport; three sisters and a brother-in-law: Juanita Taylor of Palmetto, Fla., and Jeanette and Minnis Hixson and Patsy Ricker of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces: Sandra Ricker and Vera Ann Myers.
He was a son of the late Guy and Bessie Goodman Mitchell and was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years: Irene Gray Mitchell; six brothers: Earl Mitchell, Ralph Mitchell, Guy Mitchell Jr., Homer Mitchell, Raymond Mitchell and Paul Mitchell; and two sisters: Louise Mincy and Vera Collins.
The family will receive friends from 1-7 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Julian Walton and the Rev. Don Alexander will officiate
A committal service will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning in New Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Mitchell, Dennis Hixson, Jake Ottinger, Teddy Clowers, Bill Ricker, and Eldon Myers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Robinson, Bob Orr, the members of American Legion Post No. 64 and the Men's Bible Class of Asbury UM Church, J.T. Clowers, Tim Harrison, Roger Wampler, Dr. Joe Austin, Jeffrey Gray, Mark Laws, and Mike Sams.
VFW Post No.1990, American Legion Post No. 64, and the Tennessee National Guard will provide a military graveside service.
