Alfred "Bricklayer Red" Cunningham had several brushes with the law. Apparently he was involved in gambling and liquor running and other criminal activity. His rented car was forced off the road by three men, who confronted him, then shot him through the spine as he tried to run away. He was taken St. Elizabeth Hospital, but refused to identify who shot him before he died later that day. He had been a machinist living at home with his parents and was only 29.
