The funeral for Nancy Lee Penn Bowles, 89, of 707 Fourth St., Martinsville, who died Dec. 25, 2011, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville, will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hairston Funeral Home with Pastor Jane Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends for a half-hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter Eleanor "Bonnie" Draper and David Draper at 1011 Roundabout Road, Martinsville.
She was born April 12, 1922, in Logan, W.Va., to George Patrick Penn and Martha Lee Hairston Penn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Uriah Bowles.
She lived in Martinsville for more than 50 years and graduated from Henry County Training School. She worked as a licensed practical nurse for more than 40 years at Martinsville General Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Martinsville before retiring.
She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, the American Legion and the Hairston Clan.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter Eleanor Draper, are three sons, David Uriah Bowles Jr. of Petersburg, George Earl Bowles of Queens, N.Y., and Michael Maurice Bowles of Martinsville; two daughters, Verna Bowles Jordan of Dale City and Lessye Yvonne Dandridge of Martinsville; a sister, Glodene Penn Taylor of Raleigh, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
