Birth: Sep. 27, 1902
Mississippi, USA
Death: Jun. 15, 1975
Calhoun County
Alabama, USA

Husband of Carrie Wilbur Ray

Alonzo Dewitt Hicks was born 27 Sep 1902 to Alonzo (Lon) M. Hicks (1869-1941) and Welthia Jane Wilson (1873-1944).

His siblings were:
Ola Hilda Hicks (1895-1984),
Elba Byrd Hicks (1896-1967),
Maggie Hicks (1900-1986),
Linnie Hicks (1905-????),
Minnie Hicks (1905-????) and
Franklin Fillmore Hicks (1909-1975).

Alonzo grew up in extreme poverty, and had no formal education as far as I know. It is said that his great-grandmother was a full-bloodied Cherokee Indian, however, I have yet to find records validating this information.

Alonzo Dewitt Hicks and Carrie Wilbur Ray were married 03 Jul 1923, in Piedmont, Alabama. They would live to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 1973. Alonzo and Carrie were the parents of:

Floyd Royal Hicks (1924-1924)
Malcoln Dewitt Hicks (1926-1982)
Edwin Durwood Hicks (1927-2003)
Billy Dorval Hicks (1931-1933)
John Franklin Hicks (1935-1935)
Nellie Grace Hicks (1937- ) and
Bennie Paul Hicks (1939-1987).

Alonzo Dewitt (he went by the name "Dewitt") was a farmer for many years in Mississippi. In the 1940's, after moving his family to Alabama, he went to work at the Anniston Ordnance Depot (later known as Anniston Army Depot). He continued to work for the Department of Defense until his retirement.

Alonzo Dewitt Hicks died on 15 June 1975 at Anniston Memorial Hospital, Anniston, Alabama from a massive stroke and complications of kidney disease and heart failure. Alonzo Dewitt Hicks is buried in the Jacksonville City Cemetery, Jacksonville, Alabama. His wife and one infant son are also buried there.

Interesting Fact: Unfortunately, I have been able to find very little information on my paternal grandfather, Alonzo Dewitt Hicks. I do remember him as always seeming to be sad; probably due to the difficult life of growing up in extreme poverty.

Additionally, he and his wife, Carrie Ray Hicks, lost three of their children in infancy and early childhood. He moved his family from Mississippi to Alabama several times before eventually settling in Piedmont, Alabama.
