Second Roman Emperor, ascending to the throne upon the death of Augustus. Reigned from AD 14 to AD 37. Tiberius was unpopular as an Emperor, and spent much of his reign in self-exile on the island of Capri while Rome was run by Sejanus, head of the Praetorian Guards. By the time of his death at 78 years in 37 AD, he was so unpopular that the Senate refused to vote him divine honors, and mobs filled the streets yelling "To the Tiber with Tiberius," referencing the disposal of criminals.
