Mrs. Lilla B. Sargent, one of Canaan's best-known women and for 19 years postmaster of this village, died at her home Sunday noon following a long period of impaired health. She was the widow of the late Oscar B. Sargent, whose death occurred 11 years ago this month.

Mrs. Sargent was born in Canaan March 21, 1867, making her home during early womanhood with Mr. and Mrs. George W. Muzzey of this village. She was married to Mr. Sargent July 5, 1888, the couple residing on the present Edwin Pierce farm before removing to this village, where in the former postoffice block Mrs. Sargent conducted a millinery and ladies' furnishings store. In 1897 she succeeded the late Carey Smith as postmaster and retained her commissions during the administrations of McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft, retiring in 1916 in favor of Edwin M. Allen. Since Mr. Sargent's death she had lived quietly at the Parker Street residence, failing eyesight restricting her activities to a great extent.

Mrs. Sargent's attractive personality, her kindly spirit and open-heartedness gained for her in her early years the affection of the community almost as a whole and no Canaan woman was more widely beloved. She was impulsively generous, often to the point of her own personal neglect, a gracious hostess and surpasslingly efficient homemaker. Almost alone in the world so far as immediate relatives could be numbered, she has had the faithful care and protection of William A. Shepard, virtually a younger brother, who like her passed his childhood days with the Muzzeys and since their death had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Sargent. His devotion has guarded her against the desolation of dark and lonely days.

Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, the eleventh anniversary of her husband's passing away. Rev. Clarence E. Savage read from the scriptures and spoke with feeling and appreciation of Mrs. Sargent's high qualities. The pall-bearers were Ralph H. Dodge, Fred G. Cross, Claude J. Decato, Herbert E. Brown, George M. Thompson and Eugene F. Lorden. Philip Cushman conducted the services, assisted by Thomas Lorden. Burial was at Wells cemetery.
