Calogero was born in Sciacca, Sicily at 6:20 AM. He left from Palermo, Sicily on the ship SS Alsatia on 9/16/1899. He arrived at the Port of NY on October 12, 1899. He is listed on the Ship Manifest (E) as traveling with two other people from Sciacca. They were Antonino Russo (age either 15 or 16) and Ignazio Arena (age 25). Upon arrival he went to live with the brother of Ignazio Arena, Vincenzo, at 126 Elizabeth Street in Manhattan. He lived in Little Italy in Manhattan, NY until his move to Brooklyn some years later (after 1905 State Census). According to his son Simone (Sam) he had several cigar stores including one located at 1495 DeKalb in Brooklyn, and one in Florida. He filed a Declaration of Intention to become a Citizen on April 23, 1923 (#153972). After waiting the required five years, he filed a Petition for Citizenship on May 20,1928 (#320127). The witnesses for his Petition were: Gaetano Tampiasi and Bartholomeo Puglisi. All three were Cigar makers in Brooklyn. He lived at 829 Hart Street in Brooklyn at that time. He became a citizen of the USA on July 28, 1932. At the time he became a citizen he was 51 years old, Dark complexion, Grey eyes, Brown hair, 5'5" tall and weighed 108 lbs. He eventually became a skilled cigar maker and owned his own shop* on 426 Wilson Ave. in Brooklyn. He returned to Sciacca at least two times to visit and use the thermal baths at Sciacca Terme.
