JOHN J. DUNBAR (Thomas, John) was born at Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island 30 May 1794 (James N. Arnold, R. I. Vital Records, Vol. 5, Part IV, Westerly, p. 100, 1894); died at his residence at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota on 26 November 1864; buried there at Evergreen Cemetery [Houston Co. Probate Records, p. 238].
John married first, probably at Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island on 29 November 1818 Elizabeth GREEN (family records). Elizabeth, daughter of Maxson (Joshua, John, Benjamin, John) GREENE and Susannah HILL, was born 7 June 1802 in Connecticut [U.S. Census] or Rhode Island [Frank L. Greene, Descendants of Joseph Greene, of Westerly, R.I., p. xxx, 1894]; died at South Hadley Falls, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts 29 January 1848, aged 45 years, of consumption [Mass. State Archives, Deaths, v. 32, p. 190]. Elizabeth was related to U. S. President Abraham LINCOLN through Rev. Obadiah HOLMES [Carl Robert Boyds, Ancestors of American Presidents, p. xxx, 1989].
Largely based on the birthplaces of their children, and census records, this family resided at Westerly, Rhode Island in 1820, removed to Connecticut circa 1822, and to Massachusetts circa 1824 or 1825, residing first at Chester, and afterwards removed to South Hadley Falls by 1833 [1820 U.S. Census, Rhode Island, Washington Co., Westerly, p. 139; 1830 U.S. Census, Massachusetts, Hampden Co., Chester, p. 088, both on microfilm].
There is a story told in the DUNBAR family that Elizabeth GREEN was a cousin of Commander PERRY and was in New York City (a small town then) when the news of Perry's victory over the British came during the War of 1812. In the celebration that followed she was carried around by the celebrating crowd when they found out she was Perry's cousin.
Prior to 25 August 1850, John married, second, Lucy T. LUDLOW, at South Hadley Falls, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts [1850 U.S. Census, Massachusetts, Hampshire Co., South Hadley Falls, microfilm]. Lucy, aged 38, was born circa 1812 at Ludlow, Massachusetts.
There is uncertainty when John removed to Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota. Late in 1853, a Mr. and Mrs. J. DUNBAR attended a Christmas party and candy pull at Caledonia, Minnesota [Caledonia Centennial Booklet, July, 1954], but this may have been his son. On 25 July 1855, John DUNBAR purchased 80 acres from Joseph PENDLETON, but this John may also have been his son. In August 1855, John, merchant, Lucy T., and Lucy M. were enumerated at South Hadley, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, [1855 Massachusetts State Census, Hampshire Co., South Hadley Falls, entry 195/206, microfilm]. Lucy died there two months later on 11 October 1855, of brain fever, and John's daugher, Lucy May, died there in June 1859 [S. Hadley VR, Deaths], indicating that John's primary residence remained at South Hadley.
John was married at South Hadley Falls, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, 24 February 1856, to, third, Delia Roselle GRISWOLD, by E. A. STANDISH, Minister of the Gospel [MA State Archives, South Hadley VR, Marr.]. Delia, aged 24, was the daughter of George5 GRISWOLD and Ester STODDARD, born circa 1822 in Connecticut [The Griswold Family - England-America, Vol. VII, pp. 134, 144; Esther Griswold French and Robert Lewis French, The Griswold Family - The First Five Generations in America, 1990, p. 365]. George5 (Daniel4, Josiah3, Jacob2, and Michael1) born at Wethersfield, Connecticut, 25 April 1781 [The Griswold Family - The First Five Generations in America, p. 134, 1943]. The 29 June 1860 U.S. Census of South Hadley, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, lists John's occupation as a merchant, aged 66 years; his wife, Delia, was 28 years old. Two servants lived with them.
Land records indicate that John removed to Caledonia by 1862, when he bought 80 acres from his nephew Jos. PENDLETON [Houston Co., Land Deeds, Bk. "E", p. 202].
A petition for probate at Caledonia, Minnesota by Delia R., wife of John, dated 5 December 1864, testifies that John died intestate 26 November 1864 at his residence at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota [Houston Co. Probate Records, p. 238]. The initial petition for probate dated 5 December 1864 and final decree dividing his estate dated December 1865 lists six children: Sarah A. GATES, John J. DUNBAR, William F. DUNBAR, Oliver C. DUNBAR, Anstis F. BELDING, of Caledonia, and Thomas M. DUNBAR of the Territory of Colorado. Only two claims were made against John's estate, one for his coffin and funeral expenses totaling $35.83 from Delia R. DUNBAR, and one for medical expenses totalling $10 by Dr. H. B. LAFLUER.
