The son of Rachael L. Ziegler, in 1860, he was a farmer living near Delta in Peach Bottom Township, York County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had auburn hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. I, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Detailed as a teamster during the winter of 1863 and honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863.
He married Mary Jones January 1866 and fathered John Williamson (b. 08/12/68), James Charles (b. 01/02/71), Hannah Grace (b. 03/10/75), and Hattie Florence (b. 06/17/77). He lived briefly in several towns in Illinois, including Chicago, and just as briefly lived in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He returned to Pennsylvania and lived principally in Chester County and the Philadelphia area. At his death, he was a resident of Landsdowne, Delaware County.
He spelled his last name "Zeigler" prior to 1869 but then switched to "Ziegler" to "conform with the customary German form of spelling name."
