Governor of Vermont. The son of Senator Ernest Gibson, he graduated from Norwich University in 1923 and George Washington University Law School in 1926, afterwards becoming an attorney in Brattleboro. From 1929 to 1933 Gibson was Windham County State's Attorney. He was Assistant Secretary of the Vermont Senate from 1931 to 1933 and Senate Secretary from 1933 to 1940. In 1940 he was appointed to the US Senate seat left vacant by his father's death, serving from June 1940 to January 1941. A longtime member of the National Guard, he was activated for World War II service in the Pacific with the 43rd (Winged Victory) Division, serving as Division G-2 (Intelligence Officer). He was discharged as a Colonel in 1945 and his awards included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit and Purple Heart. After the death of 43rd Division commander and likely gubernatorial candidate General Leonard Wing, Gibson decided to run, defeated incumbent Mortimer Proctor in the Republican primary, and then won the general election. He served as Governor from 1947 to 1950, resigning in his second term to accept appointment as US District Judge, a post in which he served until his death. (bio by: Bill McKern)
