He was born and raised in Clay, Illinois. At a very young age, Donnell contracted tuburculosis and was sent to Albuquerque to be in a TB hospital for many months. This move to New Mexico was suggested by the doctors, and family friend Stella Mae Crackin was instrumental in the care of Donnell.
