William L. Harding was a United States Army Officer during the American Civil War, 1861 to 1865.
He enrolled on August 9th, 1862, at New York City, New York, for two years service, at the age of 24 and was mustered into service as First Lieutenant & Assistant Surgeon of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hawkins Zouaves, on August 20th, 1862. He served with the regiment in North Carolina and Virginia, and returned with them regiment at the end of their service and was mustered out of service with the Regiment on May 20th, 1863. He shortly thereafter enrolled on June 30th, 1863, at Albany, New York, for three years service, and was mustered into service as First Lieutenant & Assistant Surgeon of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 8th, 1863, however when that organization was merged into the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment he was mustered out of service on October 14th, 1863, at New York City, New York. He would later serve as a Surgeon with the 102nd New York Militia Regiment in 1864 for one hundred days.
