Buried in Garbage
Body of Murdered Youth is Discovered.

San Francisco, July 14

While employees of the sanitary reduction works were about to empty one of the large bins into the furnace last night they found the body of John Buchnoff, a 14 year old boy, buried in four feet of garbage, the condition of the body and the circumstances surrounding the case leading the police to believe the youth was murdered. A number of detectives are making a thorough investigation. Buchnoff was the son of Feodor Buchnoff, a Russian laborer residing about ten blocks from the reduction works. According to the father the boy was last seen alive when he went home to lunch yesterday. At the morgue it was found that there are several bumps on the boy's head as well as a cut over the right ear. Indications point also to a fracture in the skull.

Police are Still at Loss

Boy May Have Accidentally Fallen Into Receptacle and Been Smothered to Death-Detectives Work on the Case.
(Special to The Tribune)

San Francisco, July 11 - When the autopsy was held today on the body of John Buchnoff which was found in a bin of the garbage crematory last night police were inclined to alter their [thought] that the boy was murdered. The autopsy showed that death was due to suffocation and that the wound about the head might have been inflicted after death by a pitchfork.

LATEST THEORY
The theory that now obtains is that the boy was probably playing about the bins, and accidentally fell in. He may have been stunned by the fall and while lying at the bottom of the bin in an unconscious condition, several loads of garbage might have been dumped upon him thereby suffocating him. The police however will continue their investigation until perfectly satisfied that the lad did not meet with foul play. Two boys whom the detectives interviewed today said that they had been playing with the dead lad until 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon and when he left them he said he was going to the garbage crematory. The boys did not see him again.

STRANGE FEATURE
One of the strange features of the case in the estimation of the police is the alleged instinct of the father John Buchnoff, who had missed his son from supper and who arrived search of the lad at the deduction works at the moment the body was recovered. It has been said that this action on the part of the parent showed a foreknowledge of the discovery and the detectives are making rigid inquiry into the fact. John Buchnoff the father, who resides at 950 De Haro street is a Russian and makes a scanty living as a laborer. He has practically no knowledge of English and in a very brief and troubled interview with The Tribune reporter today said through an interpreter.

THE FATHER'S STORY
My poor son was killed. I didn't know who did it. I don't know who killed him. I have no enemies who would do it to get even with me. Nobody would kill my boy because everyone liked my boy. Why did I go to the garbage bin to find him? I searched every place for him and then I heard that the coroner had gone there for a body, and I went there and there it was I saw my son. I had not seen him since dinner."

The father was accompanied by lad's mother at the time and eyes of both were filled with tears. They were waiting at the time to see Chief Biggy.

DEEP CUT UNDER EAR
Buchnoff and his wife called at the morgue early this morning and viewed the remains of their offspring. The face was still covered with the grime of the garbage bin. There were abrasions on the face and forehead and there was a deep cut under the right ear. The frame was that of a hearty boy. When the remains were found rigor mortis was almost complete and today the arms as they lay folded on the breast had to be tied to keep them in repose.

MOTHER FRANTIC.
An unusual feature of the visit of the parents to the morgue and one which shocked the attendants of the institution was the conduct of the mother. When the woman saw the remains of her son on the slab she burst into tears. Then the tears ceased to flow, and the woman made a minute examination of every mark on the body. She even looked into the mouth and inspected the teeth and then opened the drooped eyelids and gazed for some time into the lusterless eyes. The attendants discovered that the pupil of one of the eyes was much larger than the other. The morgue men said that this enlargement was due to a fracture of the skull. The mother would not tell why she made the examination referred to. The lad wore when he met his death a black shirt, blue overalls, beneath which was a pair of black knee pants. Under the order of Captain of Detectives Kelly the clothes have been preserved and will alter be carefully examined with a view to finding some facts to support the murder theory.

THE AUTOPSY.
Dr. Clarke, autopsy surgeon, after making an autopsy, arrived at the conclusion that death was occasioned by suffocation. He versed his opinion on the congested condition of the lungs of the deceased. An examination of the head showed that the skull had been punctured by a sharp, round instrument, which might have been the prong of a pitchfork. The brain, however, was not penetrated. A short distance from the hole in the skull there was an abrasion of the scalp which appeared as though it might have been made by a pitchfork.

FRACTURE OF SKULL.
There was a bad fracture of the skull, almost at the base of the brain. The doctor could give no explanation as to what might have produced the fracture.

SAW BOY AT 5 o'clock.
Detectives Regan and O'Connell informed The Tribune reporter this afternoon that they have discovered two boys, namely Valentino Arato, aged 11 years, who resides at 946 De Haro street and Arthur McClellan, whose home is at 830 Rhode Island street, who were playing yesterday afternoon about 5 o'clock with little Buchnoff. The lads say that at that hour young Buchnoff left them and climbed the hill to the dumps at the reduction works in the vicinity of the bin in which the victim's remains were found. They waited an hour for their companion to return, but did not see him again. They supposed that young Buchnoff had gone home from the other side of the dump and they then went to their own homes.

MAY HAVE BEEN STRUCK.
Captain Kelley, chief of detectives, stated this afternoon that the dead boy may have incurred the wrath of some of the drivers of the garbage wagons who might have struck him over the head with a shovel and then buried him under the garbage with the intention of burning the body in the incinerator.

WATCHMAN ARRESTED.
August Delmouth, watchman at the sanitary reduction, was taken to the city prison this afternoon and placed in detinue as the police think he should know whether any boys were playing about the bins yesterday afternoon.
Every scavenger who took a load of garbage to the crematory yesterday will be rounded up by the police and questioned.
