John Henry Carless
Birth: Nov. 11, 1896
Death: Nov. 17, 1917

World War I Victoria Cross recipient. Born at Walsall, Staffordshire, England, joined the Royal Navy on September 1, 1915 and served as a Ordinary Seaman on board the HMS Caledon. On November 17, 1917 at the Battle of Heligoland, Germany, he was the Rammer on a gun that was hit, causing many casualties. He was mortally wounded in the abdomen, but continued to serve his gun and also assisted in clearing away casualties. He collapsed but managed to get up and cheer the crew that took over the gun before falling dead.
