Was a Revolutionary War Hero.

On March 4, 1776 2nd Lieutenant, 6th Virginia, On August 7, 1776; 1st Lieutenant, On September 23, 1777; he was made Captain, transferred to 2nd Virginia, On September 14, 1778. He commanded Col. Daniel Morgan's select regiment of riflemen under George Washington during service in New Jersey in 1776, and captured a British Officer with his entire command at the battle of Princeton. At the call of Washington, he volunteered to Join the Southern Army under General Lincoln. He served under Light-Horse Harry Lee and took part in many of his successful exploits. He later served under General Henry Lee and on May 12, 1780 he was taken prisoner at Charleston, he was permitted to return home on parole. On September 30, 1783 he was made Major by brevet.
