William was born in Cumberland Valley, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, the son of Patriot Nathaniel Peter Burdue and Margaret Welch. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. William married Elizabeth Blazer Mar 28, 1809 in Hanover Township, Washington, Pennsylvania. He was a very strict and devout Methodist. William provided the small community with their first mill. He was a miller and a farmer. His children included Nathaniel John, George Isaac, Stillborn Twin Boy, Stillborn Twin Girl, William Welch, John, Jacob, Stillborn Twin Girl, Stillborn Twin Girl, Isaac, and Benjamin. William and his immediate family disassociated themselves from the rest of his parents' family because of the former's strong temperance views.
