Eva Ruth Dooley was actually born on a homestead in Rockcreek Township, Kansas - little more than two miles from the homestead where her mother was born. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Clinton Ellsworth Dooley and Mabel Esther Smith.
She married John Byron Martin on June 2, 1940 in a park in Augusta, Kansas. They would have a son, John, before Byron would join the Navy. Byron was stationed aboard the USS La Prade during World War II leaving Eva Ruth to keep the home fires burning. Byron returned safely from the War.
When their second child, Bennie Ruth, was less than one year old Byron would be burned by 700 degree ashpalt which sprayed from an exploding tower at the Sacony-Vacuum Refinery of Augusta, Kansas. He would die from third degree burns within 24 hours.
Eva Ruth put herself through nursing school and worked as an RN in Winfield, Kansas until her retirement. She had 7 grandchildren and they gave her 10 great-grandchildren plus two more great-granddaughters born shortly after her death and another great-grandson just a year later. One great-granddaughter would share her middle name and it brought her joy to introduce that little girl as "My little namesake".
She would never remarry and throughout her life she could not talk about her Byron without crying. Their reunion in Heaven must certainly have been sweet.
