WORLD WAR II VETERAN
Upon graduation from Beecher City High School in Ill., Mr. Wallen joined the Army, where he was a telecommunications specialist. He served during World War II and fought in THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. IJ was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received during his enlistment.
In 1952 he started working for Halliburton as a cementer in Flora, Ill. and transferred to Indiana six years later where he retired in 1984 as an assistant superintendent and moved to Rogers, Ark.
IJ loved to sketch and paint and was a talented artist who left his drawings and paintings on everything from napkins to oil canvas and wood cut from his black walnut trees in Arkansas. If you were a friend or family you had something that he had left his mark on. After joining the Army, he sent drawings and sketches of his WWII tour to his family and local newspaper, which published the drawings and letters, keeping readers updated about what was going on.
He also was a wonderful gardener who always had a huge vegetable garden that he loved to share with his family and friends, or whoever stopped by to ask gardening tips. IJ also loved growing flowers and riding on his tractor around his 3 1/2 acres.
He had a beautiful singing voice and sang in a quartet for a radio station in Ardmore, Oklahoma. IJ also had a knack for mimicking characters' voices and did a POPEYE radio program, providing all of the characters' voices for a 15 minute show.
He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and led a bus ministry in Rogers, Ark., and was a long time member of the Indiana Church of Christ.
IJ was also a member of the Indiana VFW Post #1989. He was an avid fisherman who never missed the chance to go fishing. Fishing and art went along with any conversation you had about IJ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence Bernice Eddy Wallen, whom he was married to for 54 years, and a brother, Tommy G. Wallen.
