Roland "Rollie" Arns, 80, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of natural causes.
Roland was born on May 20, 1931, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Irving and Lois (Pierce) Arns.
He was baptized and confirmed at Warren Evangelical Church rural Waverly. Rollie graduated from Waverly High School, where he lettered in basketball, football, and track, and was honored as a high school All American. He then attended Iowa State University on a football scholarship.
On June 17, 1951, Rollie was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Betty Strotman at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. After their wedding they returned to Ames, where Rollie continued at Iowa State, graduated in 1953 with a degree in farm operations. While at Iowa State he lettered three years in football, at the center position and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. The couple moved back to Waverly for nine months, while Rollie worked for Kehe Construction and played for the Waterloo Wildcats – semi- pro football team.
In May of 1954, they moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where Rollie entered the U.S. Army, and served as a Second Lieutenant, and was honorably discharged on March 1, 1956. While in the service, Rollie played on the Army Football Team. Following his discharge they moved back to Waverly to farm northwest of Bremer. On February 8, 1962, they moved to Rollie's home farm south of Bremer, where they raised hogs and dairy cattle until 1993, when they retired.
Rollie was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. Rollie was also past president of B & B Oil Company, had served as president of Bremer County Extension Council, and was also a member of the county and state DHIA boards. Rollie truly enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Rollie is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Betty Arns of Waverly; his seven children and their spouses, Mary Engstrom of Postville, Iowa, Teri (Arnold) Emberton of Hamburg, Iowa, Nancy (Al) Behrens of Hudson, Illinois, Tom (April) Arns of Waverly, David (Ann) Arns of Waverly, Lori (Andrew) Cory of Elkhart, Iowa, Jennifer (Rod) Rodenbeck of Waverly; 19 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
Rollie was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marjorie N. Squires; and a son-in-law, Roger Engstrom.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 23, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly, with Rev. Deborah (Coble) Wise officiating. Burial in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #176. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22nd from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in the Wesley Foyer. Memorials may be directed to W-SR Dollars for Scholars program or Trinity United Methodist Church.
