Sylvanus Beidleman, 88, Succumbs to His Ills at Bingen

The speedly thinning ranks of "The Boys of '61" lost another member yesterday when Sylvanus Beidelman, of Bingen, succumbed to infirmities attendant with old age, passing away at 4.15 o'clock in the afternoon, at his late home in Bingen.

Mr. Beidelman, with three brothers, was among the first to enlist in the Union Army, serving the entire four years. He saw action in the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle at Hatcher's Run and the Battle of Fredericksburg, and was with the Union army at Appomattox, when Lee surrendered.

Born Sept. 3, 1839, in Springfield township, Bucks county, Mr. Beidelman would have been 88 years old on Saturday. He was the son of Abraham and Hannah (Mann) Beidelman. In July 1866 he married Miss Margaret Christian Gangware, who bore him fourteen children, four of whom, with his widow, survive.

From 1883 to 1903 Mr. Beidelman represented the Bethlehem Steel company in the capacity of superintendent of railroad construction for the Jaragua Iron company, at San Diego, Cuba.

Until yesterday, Mr. Beidelman was the oldest living member oft he Oldham Post, of Bethlehem.

Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles F. Reinhard, John G. Beidelman and Robert T. Beidelman, all of Bingen, and Mrs. Newton Rinker, of Bethlehem, one sister, Mrs. Harriet Hauck, Allentown, and one brother, Titus Beidelman, of New York City. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

The deceased veteran was a member of the P. O. S. of A., of Spring Valley as well as Oldham Post of the G. A. R., of Bethlehem.

A military funeral will be held from his late home on Saturday at 2 o'clock, with services in the Friedensville church at 2.30 o'clock, D. S. T. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
