| Birth: | May 24, 1816, Ireland | | Death: | Jun. 23, 1890 Rochester Monroe County New York, USA | Horticultural scientist. He was a highly respected writer and editor on the subject of horticulture, and co-founded (with George Ellwanger) the Ellwanger & Barry Nursery in 1840, which grew to be the largest operation of its kind in the world. The Ellwanger and Barry Nursery was one of the main reasons that Rochester changed from the "Flour City" to the "Flower City" when horticulture overtook milling as the city's leading industry. He was deeply involved with local business and politics, a tradition which remained in his family for several generations, including most notably his grandson Peter, who was elected Mayor of Rochester in 1955.
