The son of John A. Shive and Elvira McNeely. C.C. Shive married on August 9, 1853, Mary Dorothea Harria in Charlotte, North Carolina. She would pass away on August 6, 1867 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Even though they were newlyweds at the time of C. C.'s death, Mary would give birth to their daughter, Viola Cowan Shive on June 2, 1854 in Victoria, Texas. The baby Viola was the namesake of Viola Shive, the widow of John Robinson Shive, C.C.'s brother, who had passed away of yellow fever on August 17th in Victoria, Texas. No doubt, both widows had established a strong bond in the midst of their grief.

We are sorry to announce, that Mr. C. C. Shive who had charge of the Aranama College, died, of the yellow fever, at Victoria, on the eighteenth instant. Mr. Shive had recently returned from a visit to his native State-North Carolina. He was married during his absence and was compelled to return to Texas to meet his engagements to take charge of his school. He was our class-mate, and graduated at Davidson College, n 1850. He was a young man of indefatigable industry, and of fine talent. For several years he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Numerous friends will deplore his death, ad cherish the memory of his amiable disposition and eminent abilities. Peace to his ashes.
