Compiler's Note:In his memoirs William W. Borden writes: “My ancestors were Quakers. My father, John Borden, was born in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. In 1816, he came west and entered from the government several tracts of land in section 3, township one south, range five east in Wood township, Clark county, Indiana. Here he plotted a small village. Its lines ran parallel and at rights angles to (Muddy Fork of) Silver Creek. He named the village New Providence in honor of Providence, Rhode Island. His first wife was Comfort Hicks and his second Lydia Bellows, my mother. He died November 7, 1824.”
