Ray Ellwood Gooding
He was born May 7, 1918 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Harry L.Gooding, and Emma C. Hansen Gooding. His father was a manual training teacher, for many years in Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri. By 1930, his mother was supporting the family as a seamstress in her home, and they were living in Kansas City, Kansas. On the 18th of July 1941 Ray Gooding,from Wyandotte County, Mo., enlisted into the Army Air Corps at Leavenworth, Kansas. He was listed as having four years of high school, his civil occupation was listed as retail manager, he was 5 ft. 10 in. tall and weighed 172 lbs. He served until the 24th of October 1945. After World War II, Ray moved to Oklahoma. He married Miss Patricia Lou Terral in Vinita, Craig Co., Oklahoma, and by they 1952 were living in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. That year Mr. Gooding and wife Patty L. are listed in the city directory living at 1709 Monatana Avenue. He was manager of the McLellan's Variety Store at 419 Chickasha Ave., and she was a clerk for Consolidated Gas Company. It was probably in Grady County, Oklahoma that their son Harry Gooding was born. Shortly after this time, they moved to Texas, and their son Jack was born in Bell County, Tx. in 1953. They moved to Dallas in 1956, where their son Douglas was born in 1958, followed by son Bryan in 1962 and Will in 1965. In 1963, they lived at 1333 Houghton Rd. in Pleasant Grove, about a half mile west of the Pleasant Grove Shopping Center. He was employed as manager of M.E. Moses, in the shopping center, and held this position since his move to Dallas in 1956. Mr. Gooding was a member of the Pleasant Grove Merchants association, the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce,and the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club (serving with directors, Max Goldblatt, G.R. Harty, W.W. Hughes and others). He was on the board of managers for the Southeast Dallas Y.M.C.A., a sponsor for the W.W. Samuell Key Club, and was a member of the Urban Park Methodist Church. In the late 1960s, Mr. Gooding and his wife Patti sponsored foreign exchange student Brahim "Abraham" Elamiri who was from Casa Blanca, Morocco. He lived with them, in their home at 2136 Riverway in the Grove, and attended W.W. Samuell in 1969. He became their "adopted" son.
Mr. Ray Gooding died of heart failure Sunday night, December 12, 1971, at Baylor Medical Center. Visitation was at Dudley M. Hughes Funeral Home on Buckner Blvd, with the funeral services held at Urban Park Methodist Church, Wednesday, December 15th. He was buried at Restland Memorial Park Cemetery.
