Maxwell Kirk McCausland, 84, who witnessed the assassination of President Lincoln and was a pioneer settler of Dallas, having come into the city on the first railroad train which entered it, died Sunday evening at the home of his niece, Mrs. M. Chatelain, 212 Crawford street. He was a bachelor.

Born in West Virginia he settled, at an early age, in Pennsylvania, and at the age of 18 enlisted in the Federal Army. He was a member of Company A, 100th Pennsylvania Infantry, a part of the Army of the Potomac. While the forces were encamped near Washington, McCausland and several other soldiers attended the performance in Ford's Theater the night of the tragic assassination of the President, and were seated not twenty yards from Lincoln's box.

Discharged from the army, McCausland came to Texas, a passenger on the first train to enter Dallas. As a cowman and a sheep herder McCausland many times encountered the Indians, and twice yearly made the trip from Dallas to Austin for supplies in a wagon. He claimed that for fifteen years he never slept beneath a blanket.

His parents were charter members of the first church founded by Alexander Campbell, who founded the Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Archer-Cox Chapel, with the Rev. L.B. Haskins, pastor of the Oak Cliff Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Dallas Morning News, May 7, 1928
