MRS. STELLA B. HIGGINS
Mrs. Stella B. Higgins, 80, of 227 Beech St., a native of Glastenbury who had made her home her for seven decades, died at Putnam Memorial Hospital Wednesday night. She had been transferred to the hospital early in the afternoon.
She was a daughter of the late Eli and Martha (Mallory) Briggs. The family came to Bennington to live when she was 10 years old and her schooling had been received here. For many years she had been employed at the old textile plant, the Allen-A and before that at the Cooper mill. Her last employment before her retirement was at Thomson Mfg. Co.
She was the widow of Edward Higgins, a well-known sports enthusiast, who died a number of years ago.
Mrs. Higgins had resided in the same house on Beech Street since 1920. Previously she had lived at Bradford Place and on Main Street where Bennington High School is now located. She was skilled at tatting, a craft which few attempt nowadays. Her artistic work was known to many.
She leaves a sister, Mrs. Susan Nolan of Milldale, Conn.; two nephews, Francis Amadon and F. Ray Paddock; three nieces, Mrs. Kathryn Houran and Miss Eileen Briggs, both of Bennington, and Mrs. Paul Hemberger of Milldale, Conn.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Saturday at Gibney, Haynes & Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Glenn Payne, pastor of the First Baptist Church, of which she was a member, officiating. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery in the family plot.
Calling hours at the funeral home are from 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Friday.
