"Captain of Company D, 6th Regt. Me. Vol
Killed at Rappahannock Station, Virginia"

"28 years"

"son of Samuel and Abigail"

Company D, 6th Regiment Infantry, Maine Volunteers. This company was lead by Joel A Haycock of Calais and Ruel W. Furlong of Milltown. Both of these men were killed in action. The GAR post in Calais was named for Haycock and the brook by the traffic circle in Milltown was named for Furlong.

Decorations of the graves of deceased soldiers pursuant to General Logan's Orders was performed in Calais (Maine) by Post No. 34, G.A.R., under the command of Capt. W.B. Taylor, Saturday last. The names of the dead are: George BUTLER, Michael SHEA, Edward LEHAN, Adolphus SEARS, James CONOEY, George GAYAR, Charles CHOATE, James W. ESTEY, Edgar TOWNSEND, Ruel W. FURLONG, Wm CHAMBERLAIN, Warren MUNSON, Frank P. HOLMES, Joseph F. CONEY, Henry H. WAITE, Henry GOSS, Edward HAYMAN, Frank A. BARNARD, William W. COY, John Homer COY, Thomas H. GREEN, Russel C. DUNN, Zachariah LEAVITT, Simon BEVERLY, Charles A. FOSTER. (St. Croix Courier, June 2, 1868)

Captain Furlong was the original First Lieutenant of Company D, 6th Maine Regiment, later Captain. I would guess that he was instrumental in recruiting the Company as
he was voted its First Lieutenant and Company D seemed to have been a "Calais" Company.
Reuel was killed on 19 October, 1863 and on 26 November, the Calais Advertiser reported that his body had been
transported home along with that of Lieutenant Waite. Vessels at Calais and St. Stephen lowered their flags to half-mastduring the funerals (info from Wayne Bean)

Marriages: In St. Stephen, 7 Mar 1863, by Rev. M. Philbrook, Lieut. R.W. Furlong, 6th Regt. Maine, Vol., to Fannie B. Higgins of Eastport. (Eastport Sentinel, March 11, 1863)

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Samuel Furlong, 49, born Maine, was living in Calais, Maine, with Abigail, 39; Ruel W., 14; Loisa A., 12; Minerva, 10; Melissa, 8; Hannah, 4; and Samuel, 2, all of Maine. Living with them was Mary Ogden, 25, born N.B.
